1. Offer Owls Shelter
Owls find natural hiding places to rest, nest, and preen. While some birds seek refuge in tree cavities, others use a more creative strategy: desert owls build their nests in cacti, and burrowing owls make their homes underground. You can attract owls by placing an owl nest box or other prefabricated housing in your yard.
A nest box is a birdhouse without ornamental features. Choose a straightforward brown style that blends in with the surroundings rather than building a tiny house in bright colors. Important components include a sturdy wooden design, an appropriately sized entry hole for adult owls, and a ledge or textured "front porch" area for birds to perch outside the nest box. These cozy wooden houses are sold online or can be DIY-ed.
Once you have found the right box, pick the best location. The majority of nesting boxes are best attached with screws or nails to the trunks of sturdy, older trees. Place the nest box 10 to 15 feet above the ground on the trunk of a suitable tree using a ladder—owls want to be high up and away from other animals. As long as it is high and away from crowded areas, you can attach one to your shed or barn. Do this early in the spring or before your local owls' nesting season for best results.
